5 Ways to Prepare Your Plumbing for Freezing Temperatures.
- Disconnect your outside plumbing connections and cover with a spigot cover. When you leave your hose connected to the outdoor plumbing connections it keeps them from draining properly. When water is not allowed to drain from the brass spigot or other fitting, it can freeze and expand causing damage.
- Close or cover vents and crawl space passages on the outside of your home. Covering up your vents and crawl space entries will help to keep the freezing air from blowing on the plumbing and pipes located under your home.
- If your drinking water comes from a well, you will need to wrap blankets around exposed pipes to keep the water inside of it from freezing and possibly causing the pipes to burst.
- Know where your water main is so you can locate and shut it off in case of an emergency.
- Inside your home you should make sure to do the following: open cabinets that contain plumbing within them and keep them open, which allows heat from your home to warm the pipes and keep the water inside from freezing; also, keep your home heated to 55 degrees or above, even if you are going out of town.
Taking the time to complete the tasks mentioned above can help keep you and your home dry this winter. Remember that completing the tasks above is a lot cheaper than having to fix water damage and/or plumbing issues.
