When you are choosing from a list of possible boyfriend Xmas gifts at this time of the year, you should be looking for something special, something he won’t forget. Every year there seem to be more items which become this year’s latest fashionable gift, and the choice can be bewildering.
One possible tried and tested route to follow is to remember a piece of advice we have all heard from our parents, namely to choose a present which you personally would like to receive. The truth of this simple philosophy cannot be faulted: if you can’t please everyone, you can surely (as the song says) please yourself.
Choosing a present you personally would appreciate ought to be relatively straightforward. Granted it is probably easier to imagine an appropriate (and appreciated) gift for someone of your own sex, and finding the perfect gift for a member of the opposite sex can be more difficult. Trying to get ‘inside the head’ of the person you are buying for is one way of doing this: alternatively, perhaps you know someone (not the man you’re buying for) who can assist with decision making.
Should money be no object, it’s easy to be generous. However, in a world of modest budgets, if you have a degree of imagination and some empathy for that person who means so much to you, you can derive almost as much pleasure from choosing the gift as your partner will get from receiving it.
If you’re short of time and haven’t been blessed with a moment of true inspiration in your quest, then cosmetics and clothing are evergreens which will always please the recipient. A word of caution, however, regarding certain traditional gifts. For men, it was once quite acceptable to give a ‘gentleman’ a pipe, tobacco, cigars and / or alcohol at Xmas. These were often given by children, who in turn would have had to involve an adult in the purchase of the gift.
Health and Safety considerations have had a significant effect on the volume of gifts of this nature given at Christmas time, and the increases in taxation levied on these goods have also made them less affordable. It is interesting to note in passing that the liquor industry has responded to this by offering ‘novelty packages’ which include engraved glasses, goblets and similar items as a memento which will remain when the bottle itself is finished.
A book has always been an acceptable, longer lasting memento of a special occasion. Although eBooks may prove eventually to be the way ahead, they DO require expensive IT hardware and software before they can be ‘read’ and there is no way they can compete with the distinct smell and feel of a brand new book, well tooled in genuine leather, and the aroma of fresh print on paper the first time the book is opened. The ‘hard copy’ can be picked up, put down, lost and found again, and still give pleasure when it is read for a second, third or ninety ninth time. An inscription on the flyleaf of a book to personalise the gift is something which is not possible to include in an eBook. Books are likely to remain just as popular as boyfriend Xmas gifts for many years still to come
