Getting a dental implant is the closest thing to having a real tooth. Many people who in the past had partial bridges and/or full dentures are now seeking out dental implants and enjoying what these have to offer. Dental implants allow one to chew normally and they have a small amount of nerve sensation to them.

Believe it or not, dental implants technology is not new. Implants have actually been around since the time of the Mayans. The first implant surgery in the United States was performed in the early 1950s by Dr. Linkow. He is known as the father of this technology and held three dozen patents related to this field. He also wrote a number of books on the subject.

The Advantages of Getting a Dental Implant

– It prevents bone shrinkage, which naturally occurs when a tooth is not there to keep the bone in place.
– Implants reduce the odds of a tooth chipping or cracking.
– It works like a normal tooth, whereas with dentures one will have to chew food sideways instead of normally.
– Dental implants can be brushed just like normal teeth.

A person who cannot handle bridges or dentures should seriously consider getting dental implants. Eating with these is comfortable and natural. There is also no risk of jaw problems when one gets implants.

Dental Implant Problems

While implant knowledge and technology is good, serious problems can arise if the dentist does not do a good job of putting in the dental implants. In fact, if the dentist makes a mistake, it can cause one more harm than good. This surgery is not without its risks and it is important to be aware of these risks before making an appointment to have this work done. Following are some long term problems that can occur if the implant is not properly placed:

– Improper alignment can put pressure on the jawbone. The damage is hard to detect but it is serious nonetheless.
– When the bone is being prepared for the implant, it is possible for the dentist to make a mistake and hit a nerve. This can cause partial numbness in the check and/or chin area. In serious cases, it can also cause serious speech problems.
– The bone may be accidentally damaged or chopped during the implantation process.

In order to avoid these problems, one will want to find a good dentist who has experience in doing successful dental implants. One can find out more about a dentist over the internet. It is also possible to ask a friend or relative who has had this work done to refer you to the dentist they used. Make sure the dentist knows what he or she is doing and has a track record for doing good work. While this procedure is expensive and it does have its risks, it can be well worth it. Dentures and bridges are helpful but they are not near as convenient as dental implants. If you find a good dentist and have the work done right, you can enjoy having a mouth full of healthy teeth that function properly and allow you to enjoy eating normal food comfortably and easily.

dental implants are the best way to get your teeth looking good again. To find out how a dental implant dentist can help.

Dental implants have proven to be a viable and healthy solution for many who suffer from tooth loss as a result of causes ranging from health decisions to genetic misfortune. Mini implants are one of the most advanced and effective solutions for the replacement of natural teeth. They can be a solution for those that have significant bone loss or are looking for a more affordable option to full dental implants.

What Are Mini Dental Implants?

Mini implants are a smaller version of a full-sized dental implant. They are toothpick thin posts that are made from titanium. Most frequently mini implants are used to stabilize the lower denture helping to eliminate the discomfort of a moving denture. Mini implants come with many advantages; however, they also carry with them limitations, as is outlined below.

Advantages of Mini Implants

The surgery is minimally invasive.

The entire process takes only a few hours. The patient can walk in to the office in the morning and out the same day with a full set of teeth.

The quick recovery of a mini implant patient can allow the patient to eat the same day.

It is a solution for patients that have significant bone loss that restrict them from being candidate for full dental implants.

It is a solution for patients that cannot have surgery for medical reasons.

Mini implants requires no sutures or long recovery periods.

Limitations on Mini Implants

Mini implants are not an ideal, long-term solution based on the thinness of the implant.

Non-removable dentures are not an option with mini implants.

Mini implants do not offer the same degree of stability that a normal dental implant does.

Some of the same drawbacks of traditional dentures apply when mini implants are used: somewhat uncomfortable, clicking, and esthetic drawbacks such as bad breath.

They can only be used on the lower arch. The upper arch does not integrate with the implants.

Metal fatigue is a risk with mini implants due to their size, so they can malfunction.

The best long-term option is a full dental implant, however, the cost is higher. Mini implants are a good alternative, but they cannot be seen as a replacement to natural teeth to the same degree that a dental implant is considered.
