Now that winter is here you have no doubt heard about pipes breaking on the news, from someone you know, or maybe it has even happened to you. We all know that we are supposed to open our cabinets and drip our faucets, but no one ever takes the time to tell us why. Below you will find your answer to the question why do pipes break when it freezes?
The first thing that you need to know is that when water freezes it expands. Thus, when water freezes inside pipes it also expands. This expansion does not directly cause the break in the pipe though.
Pipes actually burst from the pressure that is created inside when freezing water creates a complete blockage in the pipe. The pressure forms between the frozen blockage and the faucet causing, your pipe to fail. This is why you are constantly reminded to drip faucets in freezing temperatures. Allowing your faucet to drip can relieve the plumbing of the building pressure, thus keeping it from failing.
Other things that you can do to help keep your pipes from freezing include:
- Covering exposed pipes with insulation or blankets. Hardware stores actually carry specially insulated covers for your pipe.
- Close and/or cover vents and crawl space entrances to reduce cold air circulation to the pipes.
Leave your cabinets open to allow warm air to circulate to your pipes. - Consult with your local plumber for further information on protecting your plumbing from freezing temperatures.
